By doing stuff in the standardized game engines, they're basically frontloading a bunch of the porting costs rather than having to redo a bunch of stuff for each and every release. Similarly, Chrono Trigger is extremely likely to get a significant update at some point in the next few years so it can be ported easily and consistently.
The Pixel Remasters are full remakes in Unity for the obvious purpose of being ported to consoles. That's why Square Enix is spending a whole shitload of resources to do full remakes in new and standardized game engines for a bunch of their old classics. Square Enix released a bunch of bad ports of ports of ports of ports, and adding an additional "of ports" at the end would probably just result in another bad product and coming at no trivial cost.
Releasing Chrono Trigger or a Final Fantasy on their 15th or later platform just doesn't have that big of an incremental number of sales it can grab, so if the incremental cost of producing a port that isn't terrible is high, it might just not be worthwhile. I think a lot of this is just wrong, and demonstrates the fundamental problem. Dragon Quest Builders 1 released on PS4.gets released years later on Switch with no PC release but 2 comes out on all platforms. Star Ocean 1 gets ported to every system you can imagine but Star Ocean 2 is PS4 exclusive in Japan Dragon Quest X exclusive in Japan, offline version too Final Fantasy XIV on PS4 and PC but not on Xbox Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles on PS4 and Switch but not on PC Chocobo mystery dungeon on PS4 and Switch but not on PC Chrono Trigger exclusive to mobile and PC Collection of Mana releases on Switch only but Collection of SaGa is on all platforms. Secret of Mana releases on PS4 and Steam but not on Switch You got games like No Man's Sky coming out on Switch but Kingdom Hearts 1.5 and 2.5 are cloud on Switch Octopath's release going from Switch only to Switch/PC only Dragon Quest XI getting drip released across Switch, PS4 and Steam Dragon Quest 1, 2, 3 exclusive on Switch The Last Remnant remastered on Switch, PS4 and mobile but the original version gets delisted on Steam with no release Final Fantasy Pixel series exclusive to Steam and mobile. FFVII Remake exclusive to PS, releases on EGS a year or so later exclusively on PC Almost all of the Japan focused releases they had regardless of the IP, platform or pricing has been just mindboggling.
